Mrs. Elsie Mackenzie is photographed
at Aviemore with the Johnnie Walker Gold Plate which was awarded
to
her British Columbia rink, winners of the 1969 Highland Week of International
Curling.
This photograph also shows, on the left ,Lord Elgin, 1969
President of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club,
and Major Alan Cameron,
Convener of the "Week"
Elsie as she was better know was a fantastic character, "I know
cause I was there" she was a wonderful lady suffice to say she
was a granny a couple of times and the other three members of the
rink were grannies also.
I will not mention any skips names but there were a few that year
who fancied there chances of winning in 1969 but their ambitions were
put on hold by Elsie Mackenzie and her rink.

This year we have
with us twenty rinks from outside Scotland, nine countries in all
being represented. This surely must be a record for any bonspiel,
and certainly a record for Scotland and the Highlands
So great has been the demand to enter that there is a waiting list
of curlers at home and overseas. It is very gratifying to know that
the Highland International Week has become so popular.
Outside bonspiels have traditionally been a feature of the curling
scene. In recent years there has seldom been sufficient frost in
the Highlands to provide the minimum depth of ice on outside ponds.
The absence of these bonspiels has been a sad miss to many. The
introduction of indoor curling facilities has made it possible to
arrange this indoor bonspiel.
Johnnie
Walker Highland Week of International Curling, during this week
the accent is not only on attaining a high standard of curling but
on recreating and fostering the social atmosphere traditionally
associated with the outdoor game and bringing together, in the true
spirit of the game curlers from all over the world |
